The Skillsme team has been busy cooking some code and we’ve just launched our biggest update for 2021. Apart from showing our newest features, I want to give you a window into our development process and shift to user centred design.

Skillsme Version 1.0

Skillsme was created to decentralise coding skill validation to get developers into better jobs. We began with a simple portfolio upload feature and a group of coding experts validating our users.

Key Problems

  1. Scalability - we didn’t have enough experts to validate and give feedback on projects.
  2. Retention - With over 2000 projects submitted in a small time frame, our users were not getting enough feedback and would not return to create new projects.

Core Problem

We did a stupid thing - designing without our user in mind.

Solution

We began interviewing and surveying the software developers in our family and friends with the goal of getting a better understanding of characteristics, habits and motivations. We were going to re-design and upgrade our platform.

Learning our lesson, our team has now adopted a User Centred Design process and coined the phrase ‘coders first’.

User-Centered Design or User-Driven Development - a framework of processes in which usability goals, user characteristics, environment, tasks and workflow of a product, service or process are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process.

What does that mean?

Product features are now driven by our coder community and we want to thank our close friends and family who have filled out multiple surveys and jumped on LONG Zoom calls.

New Features

Share projects to get feedback on code

Image

Anyone can now leave feedback on the Skillsme platform. Coders can share their personal projects to receive feedback from friends and our Skillsme coder community.

View code with the Skillsme IDE

Image

We heard the feedback on viewing code on Skillsme. Essentially it was a pain in the a** and we built our very own IDE so coders can upload and review projects with ease.

Rewards system

Anyone can now leave feedback on the Skillsme platform. Coders can share their personal projects to receive feedback from friends and our Skillsme coder community.

Connect with coders

Our new dashboard is beau-ti-ful, navigate and explore different projects and connect with coders around the world.

Compete in Hackathons

Skillsme now hosts Hackathons on our platform so our coder community can connect, code and learn together.
